William was born in Frontenac Canada in 1843. He is listed in census records as living in Frontenac from 1851 until the early 1860s. In 1864, on September 12, he married Elizabeth Hannah Scott (from Yorkshire England) in Toronto. As a couple, and later with their children, they moved around quite a bit: first to Pennsylvania, then Wisconsin, then briefly back to PA, then Wisconsin again, then to Ontario, before (finally!) settling in Hennepin County Minnesota.
William and Elizabeth had five children together: Emma Betty, William Thomas, Sarah B, Ida May, and Robert Louis Senior.
Unfortunately, Elizabeth died young in 1888 and William quickly remarried within the year to Amanda Isabelle Taylor (1859-1951), a widow with children of her own (her first husband being Albert Walton (1855-1885) and together they had two children: Mary "Mayme" and Esther.
After William's death, Amanda Isabelle went on to marry John Daniel Whipps (1857-1946).
William trained early on in life as a blacksmith and by 1888 he is recorded as running and owning a carriage manufacturing business (with which his brother Robert helped him) in Minneapolis.
After William remarried, only one child from his first marriage remained with him, Robert Louis. William was probably very close to his siblings as most of them followed him (notably Robert) wherever he chose to move. William died in July 1911 in Minnesota. He and his brother Robert are in fact buried together at Lakewood.
