Evander Isaac FINNELL was born in Granville, Monogalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia), the great-grandson of Revolutionary War soldier and Methodist minister Reuben FINNELL of Virginia.

Around 1814, this branch of the family moved from Culpeper County, Virginia. Evander's parents were William and Adelaide (Tapp) Finnell. His Finnell grandparents were Robert and Martha (Thorn) Finnell.

Evander married Elizabeth Hamilton on 31 Dec 1876 in Monongalia County. Together they had seven children.
