Fernando J. Bello was a native of Matanzas, Cuba. He was the son of Porfirio and Ramona Alard Bello. He immigrated to the United States on June 26, 1922 aboard the "Governor Cobb" steamship, disembarking at Key West, Florida. He came to the United States to attend Elon College in Elon, NC. He filed a Declaraton of Intention for Naturalization on November 6, 1925 and became a citizen in 1928

He graduated from Elon College in 1927 and moved to Reidsville, NC to teach at Reidsville High School. Later, he worked for the American Tobacco Co. until he retired. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was married to Frances Wray Bello and had one son, Dr. Thomas R. Bello of Southern Pines, NC.
