"James D. Perry was born in Bennington Co., Vermont, Aug. 17, 1815. His parents came to Michigan in 1835, taken up 160 acres of government land. James D. Perry married Grace Welts of Macomb Co., Dec. 29, 1836. She was born in Huntington Co., N.J. Jan. 16, 1814. They had nine children.His wife died in March, 1886. Mr. Perry has been Commissioner of Highways 12 years, and Overseer of Highways 45 years, out of a residence of 52 years. He moved to Redford on an ox sled and located on land taken up by a Mr. Kuhn, receiving his deed of 240 acres from the Michigan State Bank, 14 acres being cleared."

He represented Redford at the February 1860 Wayne County Democratic Convention alongside fellow township residents David Sackett and David S. Hodgeman. He likewise attended the August session joined by A. P. McIntyre and Thomas Prindle.
