He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict. On July 28, 1951, he was married to Lois Warner in Havana, Illinois. They divorced in 1971. He married Janice Rentschler Early on June 27, 1982.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Nehmelman Niederer, by one brother, Eugene, and his second wife, Janice.
