Raymond Harold Diede was born on July 20, 1926 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Harold and Pauline (Mehrer) Diede. He attended grade school in country schools in Hutchinson County, and attended high school in Menno. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the Lutheran Church in Menno.

Ray served in the Army during World War II. Even though his service in 1944 and 1945 was near the conclusion of the war, Ray was proud to have served in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation.

Ray began a trucking business and ran several gravel trucks. His gravel hauling operation was involved in the building of the Oahe Dam, the Fort Randall Dam at Pickstown, and the Gavin's Point Dam. In 1964, Ray opened Scotland Redi-Mix and provided concrete and excavation work in the area for over 42 years. Over the years, the trucking operation and Scotland Redi-Mix employed many men in the area.

Ray married Roxanna (Heismeyer) McAtee on June 1, 1971 in Sioux Falls. They made their home in Scotland and raised their children, Jody, Jaye and Jennifer.

Ray loved Scotland and was a devoted supporter of many community programs and events over the years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, and was also a member of both the Scotland American Legion Post #155 and V.F.W. Post #2966. He was recently honored for having been an American Legion member for 50 years. Ray passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 28 days.

Grateful for having shared Ray's life are his wife, Roxanna Diede of Scotland; a daughter, Jennifer (Joe, Jr.) Sedlacek of Scotland; a stepdaughter, Jody McAtee of Papillion, Nebraska; a stepson, Jaye McAtee of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren: Samantha, Tristan and McKensie Sedlacek, all of Scotland and Zane McAtee of Omaha, Nebraska; and his stepmother, Helen Diede of Terre Haute, Indiana.
