Myrtle Olive Thomas

Myrtle (McGuire) Thomas, a lifelong Puyallup Valley resident, died July 24, 2011, having lived a full and vibrant life. Myrtle was born in Tacoma on October 14, 1916 to Henry and Mary McGuire, later moving to Alderton. She attended Alderton grade school, and was a graduate of Sumner High School. She married Howard G. Thomas in 1937, and they raised their two children in Puyallup. Myrtle devoted her life to family and community. She had an amazing record of service at Good Samaritan Hospital, logging over 23,000 volunteer hours in 53 years before reluctantly retiring at the age of 93. She was a past President and long time member of the Dr. Charles Aylen Orthopedic Guild. As a breast cancer survivor of 40 years, she gave hope to hundreds of women through her volunteer work with the Reach to Recovery program of the American Cancer Society. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a 60-year member of Naomi Chapter #30 O.E.S., and honorary member of Job's Daughters Bethel #30. Myrtle claimed that her volunteer work was "purely selfish." She said she got so much more out of it than she ever gave. She loved to travel, and proudly displayed a world map depicting her numerous jaunts around the globe. In her free time she enjoyed crossword puzzles, needlepoint, music, and reading. But of all these interests, her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother. Myrtle was predeceased by her husband, her son Kenneth, two sisters, and step-granddaughter Teresa. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn and her husband David Halliday of Westminster, California, five grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She maintained a close friendship with the German foreign exchange student the family hosted in 1961-62. She also leaves behind a great many dear friends, several of whom were instrumental in her retaining her independence in recent years. She was a remarkable lady and will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Puyallup at 412 W. Pioneer on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 1:00 PM. Ever the practical woman, Myrtle and her family would appreciate remembrances in her name to Good Samaritan Hospital or First Presbyterian Church.
