From the "Boston Journal," 21 May 1877:
Obituary
Hon. Edward Earle, ex-Mayor of Worcester, died in that city on Saturday of pneumonia, his illness having lasted only about a week.
For forty-five years he had been prominently identified with the interests of Worcester, holding many positions of public trust, and showing faithfulness in all things.
He was a native of Leicester, where he was born February 10, 1811.
His father was Timothy Earle, a brother of Pliny Earle, who invented in 1790 card clothing, which was then, and now is, the principal industry of the town of Leicester.
His father was great-grandson of Ralph Earle, one of the first settlers in the town, who came from Rhode Island to Leicester in 1717, being ancester of all of that name since residing in this section of the country.

This family has been as prominently identfied with the history of this section of New England as any other, and their influence has ever been exerted in the promotion of education and morality.
Mr. Earle became a resident of Worcester in 1832 and entered at once into business, making several changes between that time and 1848, when he entered the card clothing business, with which the family has always been identified, and formed a copartnership with his half brother, Timothy K. Earle, their establishment on Grafton street being the largest in the country.
Timothy K. Earle succeeded his uncle, Pliny Earle, the inventor of card clothing, so that this house is now the oldest of the kind in the country.

From this firm he retired a few years ago, and has since taken no active part in business, although his time was fully employed in the management of private and public trusts. He was married at the age of 25 years.

In his religious sympathies he was of the Society of Friends, and was very prominent among them. His public life began in 1843, when he was elected one of the selectmen of the town of Worcester. In 1851 he was elected a member of the House of Representatives, and to the Board of Aldarmen in 1853.
In 1871 he was elected Mayor, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Hon. James B. Blake.
He was elected by the Society of Friends as one of the Indian Commissioners to act in connection with a commission selected by the President. He also held positions of a local character.
