Berthold Schelert was born in Michaluska, Ukraine, Europe on September 16, 1911. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Michaluska and confirmed at Dermanka, Ukraine in 1927.

On May, 1927, he was married to Isa Rode. Their life together was to include many hardships that the average people do not experience.

In 1945, the family was forced to flee from their home. At that time they were living in Jugoslavia (sic), but the government forced him to stay there and work while the remainder were forced to go to Austria. In about three months, Mr. Schelert was allowed to follow his family. From then on the family was forced to go from place to place. They had to make eight different places their home during this time, but they were at many more places than that for short lengths of time.

Then it so happened that they were allowed to come to America which was their fondest dream. They were sponsored by Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron through the National Lutheran Council Resettlement Service. The arrived in America last April 23. The family now had six children and another two, a boy and a girl that had passed away. The family consists of Ewald, 14; Friedrick, 10; Lily, 9; Edith, 8; Marie, 7; and Reinhard, 5.

Several weeks ago Mr. Schelert became ill while working at the Norton Auto Co. He was taken to the hospital and through an operation it was found that he suffered from an incurable cancer. He was later brought home to Luther Hall where the family is living. He passed away peacefully last Wednesday evening.

Mr. Schelert was preceded in death by his son and daughter and his father. Several years ago, his mother and two brothers and a sister were taken off to Russia into Siberia and they were never heard from since.

Funeral services were conducted at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor P. J. Weltner of Byron holding the services in the German language and Pastor G. J. Meyer speaking in the English language. Burial was made at Rose Hill Cemetery.
