Born in Meckesville on April 18, 1932, he was the son of the late William and Gayla (Lamonda) Altemose.
He was a heavy equipment operator for Glascow Construction and Morrisey Construction for more than 20 years. He also worked as a foreman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in Monroe County for 23 years.
He was a self-employed farmer on the family farm in Long Pond all his life, recently farming hay.
He and his wife owned and drove a school bus for the Pocono Mountain School District in Swiftwater.
He was an active member of the Monroe County Democratic Party all his life. He was a Tunkhannock Township supervisor in the 1980s and served on the planning commission for 20 years. He was a charter and founding member of the Tunkhannock Township Volunteer Fire Company in Long Pond and served as treasurer for more than 20 years.
In addition to his loving wife, Hazel, he is survived by a son, Francis Altemose II and his wife, Emma, of Long Pond; two grandchildren, Jennifer and William Altemose, both of Long Pond; a brother, William H. Altemose Jr. and his wife, Frances, of Stroudsburg; a sister, Helen Witt of Long Pond; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Altemose of Brodheadsville; his caregiver, Jan Verry of Long Pond; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Altemose.
