William was the son of William and Sarah Black Blystone from Pennsylvania and Ohio and had siblings: Alice, Adam, Jane, Susanna, Emma, and Blanche. He had an eighth grade education and was a brick mason and a building contractor. William first married Clara Walker on 28 January 1896 in Wood County, and after her death in 1914, married Bertha Boughton on 21 June 1916 in Lenawee County, Michigan. They had no children. William died from prostate cancer at the age of 76 years 6 months and 26 days.
