He was born in Hamilton, Mass., and lived in Jensen Beach for 15 years when he was not working overseas.
Mr. Neary graduated in 1967 from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, with a bachelor's degree.
He was involved with education his entire professional career, first as an instructor at private schools in New England, including the Dexter School, Brookline, Mass., Berkshire Country Day School in Lenox, Mass., and the Brunswick School, Greenwich, Conn., where he taught English and classics, and coached squash and golf. From 1973 until recently, he traveled to and from the Middle East frequently.
He held a variety of teaching and training positions there, including at King Faisal University in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia, with Bell Helicopter in Isfahan, Iran, and with Aramco in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Neary loved to travel and enjoyed visiting Amsterdam and the Greek islands. He was a voracious reader and an astute observer of the American political scene.
Survivors include his brothers, Michael of Palm City and John of Harker Heights, Texas.
Memorial contributions may be made to a library of choice.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. March 12 at All County Funeral Home, Stuart.
