Author. He was the Emmy and Tony Award-nominated playwriter of the 1955 "Inherit the Wind," which was co-authored with long-time writing partner Jerome Lawrence. The play was adapted to the 1960 film with the same name. Together they wrote 39 plays and 14 Broadway productions. Before his writing career, he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University. During World War II, Lawrence and Lee co-founded the Armed Forces Radio Services, which provided entertainment and news to troops both overseas and stateside. After World War II, He wrote for television shows in the 1950s including four episodes of "West Point" and 25 episodes of "The Unexpected." The Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute, a theater research facility with archives, was dedicated in Lawrence and Lee's honor at the Ohio State University in 1986. He married and the couple had two children.
