Algernon K. Johnston was the son of John & Nancey Maria Hamilton Johnston. His father served for forty years as Professor of Natural Science at Wesleyan University. Algernon later attended this university and graduated in 1857. He then had several teaching positions in Connecticut, Illinois and Wisconsin. In 1861 Mr. Johnston invented a waterproof rifle cartridge, the first of its kind, and used by the Federal troops in the Civil War. He had plants in New York City and later at Mount Vernon, NY. After the war he went into partnership with his brother Melville M. in Brooklyn making dental supplies. The factory moved to Princes Bay, Staten Island in 1876. Algernon was made director and served in that position until his resignation 7 Apr 1906. He made extensive trips to Cuba, Mexico, Canada, England and European countries for business.

He married Sarah Ann Atkins, daughter of Barnabus Paine and Sarah Pratt Atkins in Mineral Point, Wisconsin on 22 Apr 1867. Sarah is a descendent of Stephen Hopkins of "Mayflower" Pilgrims, through her father's line.
