OBITUARY
Petaluma Daily Courier
11 Apr 1912

"Mrs. Ellen Burns, one of the beloved pioneer mothers of her day, passed into final rest last night at 7 o'clock at the family home, 500 East Washington Street, where she had resided for many years. A noble woman, whose every deed was just and whose life was crowned with goodness, she did not fear death and passes into the unknown reconciled and prepared. She was a devout member of the Catholic Church and found great comfort in the faith. Mrs. burns was kind and charitable, always ready to assist bountifully in any good cause.
She was a mother in every sense of the beautiful word and reared a family who were a comfort to her and whose death has left them desolate with grief. The sincere sympathy of friends is extended to the family.
Mrs. Burns was born in Ireland, August 5, 1848 and was aged 75 years. She had made her home in Petaluma for the past 57 years. She was the widow of the late J.W. Burns who died 57 years ago. Mr. Burns was one of the pioneer merchants of this city having established the Burns' grocery in East Petaluma, which was later conducted by his son, Frank Burns, who disposed of the business a few years ago.
Mrs. Burns was the mother of J.F., W.J and E.J. Burns Mrs. E.H. Butler, Mrs. George Owens, Mrs. Guy Beggs, Mrs W.J. Farrell and Mrs. J.P. Laux.
The body will remain in the family home and the funeral will be under the direction of Mr. Blackburn of the Frank L. Blackburn parlor."
