Joseph Smith Barlow was born in Manchester, England,the youngest of 8 children born to James Barlow and Ann Crompton Barlow. He was only 14 months old when his father died and was 8 years old when he migrated from England with his mother and two other siblings. They traveled with the ill fated Martin Handcart Company. As a result Joseph's legs were frozen below the knees. His mother refused to let the doctors amputate his legs and through their combined faith and prayers he was sufficiently healed and was able to walk again. Joseph and his mother settled in Fairfield, Utah where he later met Amanda Morgan, daughter of David Morgan and Hannah Turner. Joseph was 19 and Amanda was 15 when they were married November 30, 1867. They had three children, Joseph Smith Barlow Jr, Alice Ann (Hart)and Mary Emily (Tanner). In 1876 Joseph died of appendicitis, which left Amanda homeless and destitute. A fourth son, Jesse, was born 5 months after his father's death.
