Ruth Irene Zehner, 84, Kokomo, died at 11:40 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Waterford Place Health Campus. She was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Howard County, the daughter of Albert C. and Mildred (Kelly) Tucker. On Jan. 12, 1952, in the rectory of St. Patrick Catholic Church, she married Robert J. Zehner, who preceded her in death Aug. 14, 1976.
Irene was a 1946 graduate of Kokomo High School, and attended Earlham College. She was a loving housewife and mother. She worked for Indiana Bell Telephone for five years.
She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Irene enjoyed doing counted cross stitch, crossword puzzles and playing in her euchre club.
Irene is survived by her children, Beth (Dennis) Fivecoate, Rapid City, S.D., Diane (Tim) Barkey, Decatur, Patty (Mike) Goodnight, Kokomo, and Mark (Linda) Zehner, Kokomo; eight grandchildren, Mary Beth Fivecoate, Rock Rapids, Iowa, Roberta (Shawn) Hudson, Pierre, S.D., Kelli (Will) Patch, Huntington, Sarah Goodnight, Evansville, Kate Goodnight, Kokomo, Christopher Zehner, Indianapolis, Steven Zehner, Kokomo, and Michael Zehner, Kokomo; two great-grandchildren, Christina Champion-Fivecoate, Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Sam Hudson, Pierre, S.D.; and one sister, Naomi Powers, Kokomo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Richard C. Tucker.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated noon Wednesday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 3155 S. 200 W., with Rev. Fr. David Huemmer the celebrant. Burial will follow in Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, where the rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.
