John Torrey Burnett was the youngest son of Joseph and Josephine Cutter Burnett. In 1909, he married Phyllis Francis Abbott (1888-1983. He had two children, Frances Burnett and Joseph Burnett, who was attending St. Mark's School at the time of his father's death.
John Torey Burnett was Postmaster of Boston and President of the Joseph Burnett Company of Boston. He was an active member of the Democtatic Party and served as a delegate to several National Conventions. He was treasurer of the Board of Trustees of St. Mark's School, treasurer of the Mass. Bonding and Insurance Company, director of the Webster and Atlas National Bank, trustee of the North End Savings Bank, director of the Peoples National Bank of Marlboro, and a former director of the Federal Trust Company. He was a member of the Harvard Club of Boston and New York City, the Somerset Club, Exchange Club and the Union Club. He served on the Board of Selectmen of the town of Southboro.
His hobby was farming and spent much of his free time working on experiments on his estate in Southboro.
