202 Squadron was based at RAF Killydeas, Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh. Its normal task was to provide air cover to Atlantic convoys, and to hunt German submarines. It had radar equipment to find submarines on the surface at night, when they were charging the batteries.

The aircraft was a Consolidated Catalina "Flying Boat" JX 242, which crashed at Lough Anlaban, Church Hill, Co. Fermanagh. It seems likely, given the location, that it crashed shortly after take-off. The Catalina normally had a crew of 10, but in this instance there were 8 on board. 2 of the wireless operators would have been using the radar detection equipment.

The crew comprised of (FAG#s):

#145439647 George Vincent Forbes-Lloyd, Captain/Pilot.
#145439649 Gordon Francis Tribble, Pilot.
#98155731 William John Sharp, Pilot.
#145439648 John William Henry Geldert, Flight Engineer.
#124861741 Ernest Slack, Navigator/Air Bomber.
#123586083 Frederick James Deem, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner.
#110881354 Peter Bryan Marshall, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner.
#92488425 Douglas William Nater, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner.
