WESTPORT — On May 13, 2013 the whole world cried as Arthur (Art) Raymond Carpenter, 92, of Westport died peacefully at his home surrounded by family. Those that knew him will miss him dearly and those that never had the chance to meet him will miss out on knowing one of the kindest men to live.

He was born March 2, 1921, in Port Henry, NY, one of six sons of Wilford H. and Florence V. (Lasher) Carpenter.

Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing is to gentle as real strength. This best describes our brother, father, grandfather, uncle, friend. We never met a person who didn't like Art.

He graduated from Port Henry High School in 1938. In August of 1942, at the age of 21, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He did his basic training and attended the Corpsman Medical School at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago, Ill. He was then sent to the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla., where he worked in the ward helping injured soldiers and pilots. In Jan. of 1943 he boarded the USS Block Island air craft carrier. He worked for the doctor in the operating room where he once performed and appendectomy on a German prisoner. On May 29th, 1944, at 8pm the USS Block Island was torpedoed by a German Submarine. As he was about to get off the sinking ship he noticed an injured black man, a servant to an officer, with a cut exposing the bone on his left arm. He carried the man on his shoulder down to the raft, saving his life. A recent article appeared in the North Country Living magazine detailing his days in the Navy.

Throughout his life he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Westport, N.Y. He enjoyed bowling, darts, horseshoes and shooting pool. He loved to travel and especially enjoyed his cruising vacations.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy "Sis" (Pooler) Carpenter; second wife, Honora "Honey" (Smith) Carpenter; one daughter, Kandyce (Carpenter) Swartfager; one son, Michael Carpenter; and one great-grandson, Noah Carpenter.

He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Pat Carpenter of Albany, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie (Carpenter) and Steve Lawrence of Poland, N.Y./ Apache Junction, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Kari (Desjardins) and Jim Ratliff of Westport; daughter and partner, Kathleen Desjardins and John Gereau of Westport; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and MaryEllen Smith of Queensbury, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Jeff, Eric and Brian Sherman, Steven and David Lawrence, Adam Carpenter, Kaleigh Ratliff and Cooper Sayward; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and friends that he cared deeply about; and his beloved pug, Nori.

Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at W.M. Marvins and Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y., on Sunday, June 9. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Lewis Congregational Church in Lewis, N.Y., on Monday, June 10. The burial will follow. The family asks that you join them in celebrating Arts life at a reception following the burial at the Cobble Hill Inn in Elizabethtown, N.Y.

Because of his love of animals, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Country SPCA.
