Harry A. Whitesel, 88 He was refrigeration expert for General Electric Harry A. Whitesel, 88, who was listed in Who's Who in Engineering, died Friday after a short illness at Jewish Hospital. He was a resident of Springfield Township. He was employed by the General Electric Co., where he developed refrigeration and air-conditioning products.
Mr. Whitesel also was director of research and development at Amana Refrigeration. From 1964 to 1966, he served on the headquarters staff of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers in New York City. Mr. Whitesel graduated in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois in 1924.
He received a master's in 1946 from Columbia University. He was a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Honorary Electrical Engineering Fraternity and Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering. He grew up on a farm in Illinois, and his life revolved around the family ties forged there, said his daughter, Rachel Jordan. "He was a quiet and compassionate person, and very professionally successful," she said. "But family was his top priority.
He had strong family roots from the farm he came from a family of eight children." In addition to Mrs. Jordan, of Hanover, N.H., Mr. Whitesel's survivors are two more daughters, Harriet A. VanGinkel of Clifton and Lida N. Smith of West Chester, Pa.; two brothers, George of Fort Wayne, Ind., and John of Sun City, Ariz.; two sisters, Hazel Voile of Fremont, Calif., and Hallie Stiegman of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 7 p.m. today at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Clifton. Visitation will be 5 to 6:45 p.m. at the Anderson, Baiter and Sahnd Funeral Home, 3412 Clifton Ave. Memorials may be made to Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, 111..
