Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He graduated from US Military Academy in 1858 and resigned his commission in the Union Army when the south seceded from the Union in 1861. He enlisted in the Confederate Army, was commissioned an officer on Major General Jones M. Withers' staff and fought at the Battle of Shiloh. In 1862, he was promoted commander of the 18th Alabama Infantry, served during the Kentucky Campaign and was promoted Colonel of the 12th Mississippi Cavalry in 1863. In August 1864, he was commissioned Brigadier General in command of the defenses of Mobile, Alabama and was captured while trying to hold Fort Blakely in April 1865. After the war, he was a farmer in Georgia and a US Marshal.
