Hazel Charity King was born on a ranch in Hillside, Colorado, one of nine siblings, the daughter of John Posey King and Dorcas Frances Elmira Spivey, both of N.C. She loved the ranch life, loved animals, and chose to help deliver mail by horseback, between Westcliffe and Hillside, Colorado. She contracted polio as a young woman, recovered, but walked with a small limp due to the disease. After marrying Adam John Gerlach, June 28, 1923, the couple made their home in Denver, Co, where they reared three children, Ada Lorraine Gerlach Rouch, Arlene Rosalie Gerlach and Roy King Gerlach. Hazel married Leslie Porter, after Adam's passing. She is buried with her first husband, Adam, under the Porter name in the Tower of Memories at Crown Hill. She passed away as the result of a stroke at age 75.
