Greenfield, Ma. Gazette and Courier August 23, 1919 obituary

JOSEPHINE PARKHURST ALLEN
Mrs. Josephine Parkhurst Allen, 84, widow of Franklin R. Allen, died Wednesday evening at her home, 491 East Main street. Mrs. Allen was a native of Petersham, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Parkhurst, but for the last 58 years she made her home in Greenfield. For some years past her great age and failing strength had prevented her taking an active part in the affairs of the day, but previous to that there was no work of public betterment that she was not prominent in.
As a young she played the church organ in her home town and after her marriage and coming to Greenfield she substituted as organist at All Souls church in the general work of which she was a prominent and indefatigable worker. For many years she was vice president of the Dorcas Society and was a leader in the amateur operas and theatricals put on by Judge Franklin G. Fessenden. Mrs. Allen had a most likeable personality. Her home was a social center and all around her were made entirely at ease and she was beloved by a wide circle of friends, many of whom have passed on. She is survived by two sons, William S. Allen, Clerk of the District Court, and Jerome R. Allen, a well known New York architect and three grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the house at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. John D. Reid of Salem, a former minister at All Souls Church, officiating.
