James enlisted in the 12th US Colored Heavy Artillery 14 Sept 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky.
(U.S., Colored Troops Military Service Records, 1861-1865)
In this record he is listed as 27 years old with black complexion, black hair and eyes and 5'7" tall; his place of birth is listed as Lincoln, Kentucky and occupation as farmer.
In Muster Rolls and related documents, Mr. Adkins was quickly promoted from Private to Sergeant. He was a cook and Sgt of the Commissary and when mustered out 24 Apr 1866 was Quartermaster Sergeant.

Death date was provided by a contributor - I have looked at all the military records and those available on ancestry and have yet to find a confirmation, but wanted to include it in hopes it will be found soon. Would love to connect this hero with his descendants!!!!
He had a wife and children and lived in Richmond, Indiana in the last record I could find, which I believe was 1880. I have searched for the children and keep coming up empty. I so want to find his descendants so they can know about him and give him the honor he deserves. Please if you know anything about him, please contact me!!!
