James Gloyd Childers was born in Wolfe County, Kentucky, on January 23, 1910, the son of James Howard and Cordelia Frances Puckett Childers. He and his wife, Sara Josephine Ellwood Childers, have one son, James Howard Childers.
He was educated at Lees Junior College of Jackson, Kentucky, and the University of Kentucky where he received his LL.B. degree. He served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Childers was a teacher from 1931 to 1935, and a merchant from 1936 to 1937. He had been engaged in the practice of Law since 1940, as a Quasi-Judicial Hearing Officer for the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1946 to 1966, and as Principal Attorney for the Commonwealth of Kentucky since 1966.
Mr. Childers was a member of the Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; a past President and Director of the Young Men's Christian Association of Frankfort; a member of the Masonic Order of Free and Accepted Masons, and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.
He was also a member of the Kentucky Bar Association, a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, former member of the American Judicature Society, a member of the Standing Committee of Ten-Ure Club, and the Public Employees Association.
