NEWPORT NEWS — Elizabeth C. Cantrell, 78, died May 31, 2006.
Elizabeth "Libby" was born Nov. 15, 1927, in Charlotte, N.C., to Quincy Ethan Colvard and Gilie Bell James Colvard. She graduated from Rockingham High School, N.C., in 1945 and Meredith College in 1949.
Libby worked as a social worker in Wake County, N.C., and Newport News, Va., before becoming a full-time homemaker and rearing her children.
She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mildred Gregory of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jean Morris of Newport News, Va.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Bruce H. Cantrell; a son, James Curtis Cantrell and his wife, Melanie, of Brentwood, Tenn.; a son, Keith Webster Cantrell and his wife, Debra, of Arlington Heights, Ill.; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Gerstenschlager of Stanardsville, Va.; a son, Clifford Bruce Cantrell and his wife, Jan, of White Post, Va.; a son, John Thomas Cantrell of Herndon, Va.; and six grandchildren, Rachel, Thomas, Meredith, Anna and Sarah Cantrell and Jean Gerstenschlager.
Elizabeth was a faithful member of North Riverside Baptist Church, where she worked many years with the children's programs and the library.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 2, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at North Riverside Baptist Church with the Rev. Joshua M. Speight officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
