Butler County Press; David City, NE; 5 May 1938; pg1 col3
Mrs. J.J. Barrett, respected resident of David City for the past 23 years, passed away unexpectedly at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, May 2, at her home in North David City, from a sudden heart attack. She had been in her usual health, and that morning had been sunning and hanging curtains and making preparations for a trip to Minnesota which she was greatly anticipating in a short time in company with her nephew, John Moran, and family. About noon she called to her neighbor, Mrs. Bongers, that she was not feeling well, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Anna Moran, was summoned to be with her. Mrs. Moran had gone to the kitchen, and when she returned Mrs. Barrett had passed away.
Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church, David City, in charge the pastor, Rev. W.A. Murphy. Six nephews of Mrs. Barrett, John Burns, Donald Martin, John Martin, Paul Martin, John Moran and Thomas Moran will act as pallbearers. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery at Agnew.
Mrs. Mollie Murphy and son, Emmett, and John and Catherine Burns of Crookston, Minn., Mrs. Bess Fitzsimmons of Grand Forks, N.Dak., and Thomas Moran of Broken Bow arrived Wednesday to attend the funeral.
Hannah Moran was Mrs. Barrett's maiden name. She was born at Monmouth, Ill. on March 23, 1860, a daughter of John and Bridget Moran, and at time of her death was 78 years of age. She grew to young womanhood in Illinois and was married at Alexis, Ill., on February 9, 1880 to Joseph Barrett. They made their home on a farm near Raymond, Neb. for many years, moving to David City in 1915. Mr. Barrett is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mollie Murphy of Crookston, Minn.
A quiet, kindly woman, a good neighbor and a devout member of the Catholic church and the Altar Society, Mrs. Barrett made many warm friends during her lifetime.
