1674-1757

Jan Derckse Amerman/Amberman was the third child and the second son of Derck Janse and Aelkie (Osltje) Amberman. He was born circa 1674 in Flatlands, New York. His first wife was Maria Wyckoff and there were no children. Maria died on May 2nd, 1703 and he married, as his second wife, Sara Wyckoff on May 9, 1703. (Sara was born February 2, 1681 in Flatlands. She was the daughter of Nicholas Wyckoff and Sara Montfort.) Jan and Sara had five children.

Dirck (Derrick or Richard), was Jan and Sara's eldest son and first born, circa 1704. He married Margaret Polhemus who had been baptized April 18, 1704 in Brooklyn. She was the daughter of Daniel Polhemus of Flatlands and his wife (1st) Neeltje VanDerveer. Dirck died March 19, 1781 at about the age of 77.

Sara was their second child, born May 5, 1705 and baptized May 29, 1705 in the Flatlands Dutch Church. Claar Wyckoff and Willempje Wyckoff were the witnesses at her baptism. She had later married Peter Wyckoff, Jr. on August 5, 1727. Peter had been born May 28, 1704 and he had died June 20, 1792.

Jan and Sara's third child was Nicholas. He married Neeltie Polhemus, who was born in 1706. Nicholas died in 1777 at the age of about 71, in Hillsboro, New Jersey.

The fourth child, Jan, later moved to Staten Island. He married Lammetje Stryker, who was the widow of Gerret Stoothoff, January 13, 1749. Lammetje was born February 11, 1716.

Their fifth child, Petrus, was born May 29, 1716 and baptized at the Flatlands Dutch Church. he married Willemjie Schenck November 3, 1753. Her birthdate was October 4, 1726 and she died December 18, 1802. She was the daughter of Stephen Janse Schenck and Antie Wyckoff.

Jan served as the Deacon of the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church in 1703 and 1711. He died at age 83, May 2, 1757. His Will was dated April 1, 1747. I, Jan Amerman, of the Flatlands, in Kings County, being at present very well. I leave to my wife Sara all my estate, houses, lands, tenements, meadows, and improvements, wither in Flatlands or elsewhere during her natural life, provided she continues my widow and bears my name, but no longer. I leave to my eldest son Dirck 5 pounds "for his first birth right," before any division. I leave to my sons Jan and Petrus each 50, "provided they be not married at the time when I come to die," and it is to be paid to them as an outsett; but if they are married at the time of my decease, this is to be null and void. All the rest of my estate I leave to all my children, Dirck, Nicholas, Jan, Petrus, Sara, wife of Peter Wyckoff, Jr. I make my wife and my sons executors.

Witnesses, Christopher Codwise, hatter, Denys Hegeman, Adrian Hegeman. Proved, August 9, 1758.

Jan Derckse Amberman died in 1757 and was buried at Flatlands Dutch Church Cemetery in Flatlands, Kings County, New York.

Note from Charmagne Gwynn: "According to the U.S. International Marriage Records 1560-1900. Jan and Maria were married in 1705 and then he married Sara in 1706. That would put Maria's dod between 1705-1706. Some of the family trees have Maria's dod as May 1705 but they have no backup to show that this is the case."
