He was a former treasurer and a trustee of St. Mark's School, a gift from the Burnett family. He was also a former chairman of the town advisory committee and selectman, and had been director of the Second National Bank of Boston.
He graduated from St. Mark's and from Harvard College in 1906 and attended the Harvard Law School for 2 years before entering the Burnett Company.
He was a captain in the Mass. State Guard in World War I. During WW II he screened officer candidates at the Harvard Club and was an air spotter and at the Aircraft Information Center in Boston.
