She was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Ottoville to John and Mary Kieffer Klima. In 1939, she married Albert Freund, who died in 1946. In 1954, she married Oscar Hempfling, who died in 1992.
Mrs. Hempfling was an avid card player, especially pinochle and euchre. She enjoyed reading and was an excellent cook. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Landeck, Catholic Ladies of Columbia Chapter 84 of Landeck, she was a very active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, where she was past president and a very active member of the drill team. She was one of the first cooks at Landeck School, where she retired as head cook
Survivors include three sons, James (Mary) Freund, of Elida, Robert (Pat) Freund, of Sidney, and Steve (Cathy) Hempfling, of Mariposa, Calif.; a stepson, Robert Hempfling, of Coldwater; a daughter, Jane Freund, of South Euclid; three stepdaughters, Alice (Water) Schroeder, of Columbus Grove, Angela Schroeder, of Bluffton, and Velma Kill, of Wapakoneta; two daughters-in-law, Lynda Seaman and Rosie Hempfling; and eight grandchildren, 23 stepgrandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Freund; a stepson, Ralph Hempfling; five brothers; five sisters; and a stepson-in-law, Melvin Schroeder.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Landeck. The Rev. Chris Bohnsack will officiate. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
