Alcesta was one of the at least eight children born to Stephen S. Staley (b.1821 VA) and Cynthia Gibson (b.1825 OH), who married on 14 Mar 1844 in Marshall County, Indiana. The eight children I found for them were John J. (b.1845), Alcesta (b.1848), David A. (b.1850), Thomas A. (b.1854), Leroy (b.1857), George Walter (b.1859), James Bishop (b.1862) and Harold Stanton (b.1866).

Alcesta first appeared with her family on the 1850 Census, living in My Division, Marshall, Indiana, where Alcesta's father Stephen was farming for a living. Besides her parents and brothers John and David, 16-year-old Mary J. Watters was also living with the family.

The 1860 Census found the family in Center Township (today part of Plymouth), Marshall, Indiana. Stephen was still a farmer, and though son Leroy was born in 1857, for some reason, he did not appear with the family on this census.

Leroy did pop up on the 1870 Census. The family was in the same place, Stephen still working the family farm. Sons James, born in 1862, and Harold, born in 1866, had joined the family. Alcesta was outnumbered five to one.

On 8 Jun 1871 Alcesta married Andrew J. Carey in Marshall County. Andrew was a minister and a Civil War Veteran. The couple welcomed son Otha LeRoy two days before Christmas on 23 Dec 1876. The three of them appeared together on the 1880 Census, living in Perry, Delaware, Indiana, where Andrew was serving as a minister.

Alcesta's mother Cynthia must have died shortly after that census. Alcesta's father Stephen remarried on 28 Feb 1879 in Marshall County. He appeared with second wife Angeline Lovely on the 1880 Census, living in Plymouth, Marshall. Stephen's son Harold from his first marriage, aged 14, was living with his father and step-mother. Stephen was widowed again by the 1900 Census.

Three years after that census, Alcesta and Andrew had another visit from the stork in the form of son Merrill Cecil (8 Dec 1883 - 23 Feb 1941).

By the 1900 Census, Andrew and Alcesta had moved the family to Liberty, Wabash, Indiana. Otha (enumerated as "Othan") was twenty four years old, employed as an insurance agent, still single and living at home with his parents. Andrew was still an active minister, and Alcesta reported that she had borne three children but that only two had survived to that census. Son Merrill must have already moved out before 1900.

By the 1910 Census, Andrew and Alcesta had relocated to Warsaw, Kosciusko County, Indiana and were living at 711 E. Center St. Andrew was retired and the nest was empty. Son Ortha had married wife Maud E. Rowe on 2 Apr 1905 in Grant Co., Indiana. They settled in San Bernardino, California, Otha took up farming, and he and Maud gave Andrew and Alcesta three granddaughters-Alcesta E., Mary L. and Merrill H.

When the 1920 Census rolled around, Andrew and Alcesta were still living in the same house. Both were in their early seventies. Andrew died three years after that census on 17 Nov 1923 at age 78. Alcesta lived another three years without him before dying in 1926 at age 78 and being laid to rest at his side.
