Robert “Rob” Russell Hardesty, a former officer with the Porter County Sheriff’s Police (PCSP) who joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2001, died Thursday, June 2, 2005, of injuries sustained in a training exercise.

Rob was born March 16, 1965, in Gary, the son of Alfred and Patricia (Oestreicher) Hardesty, who preceded him in death.

On May 30, 1992, in Portage, he married Toni Durall, who survives in Normal, Ill. He has two daughters, Sydney and Carly Hardesty.

Also surviving, a step-father, Bob Filipas of Portage; a step-mother, Patricia Hardesty of Portage; father- and mother-in-law, William and Sandra Durall of Fairfield, Ohio; two sisters, Linda (husband Mike) Jacobson and Sue (husband Gregg) Sobkowski, both of Portage; and several nieces and nephews.

Hardesty, who served seven years with the PCSP, achieving the rank of lieutenant, joined the FBI in December 2001, and after graduating from the FBI Academy he was assigned to the Bureau’s Springfield, Ill., division, working out of the Bloomington/Normal, Ill., office. He also served on the Bureau’s Springfield SWAT Team, and on May 25 he was injured in a fall while participating in a tactical training exercise at the FBI Academy. He subsequently died of those injuries at Inova Health System in Falls Church, Va.

Before joining the PCSP, Hardesty served as an officer with the Indiana State Excise Police between June 1988 and April 1994. He was a well respected law enforcement professional who served the local, state, and federal communities with honor.

He belonged to the Epithany Catholic Church in Normal.

A Mass of Christian Burial, the Rev. Francis Gallagher officiating, was held Wednesday, June 8 at the Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Road in Portage.

Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Portage.
