Isabelle Barr Ackermann, 73, of Newtown Square, a former research chemist, died of complications from gallbladder surgery Thursday at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Mrs. Ackermann worked about five years, beginning in 1949, at the National Institutes of Health in Washington after completing her education. She then married and became a homemaker.
In the late 1970s, Mrs. Ackermann returned to her profession after taking refresher courses at Rosemont College. She worked for 14 years as a chemist at Smith, Kline & French, DuPont Co. and Rohm & Haas Co. She retired in 1990.
She graduated from Ursinus College in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and earned a master's degree in chemistry in 1949 from the University of Rochester.
Mrs. Ackermann was active in St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Broomall. She worked more than 40 years with the United Methodist Women on numerous projects and activities, and was past president of her local chapter, her family said.
She also served as a Girl Scout leader and worked in a community outreach program in Philadelphia.
Her hobbies were cooking, baking, gardening and sewing.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Guenter Ackermann; daughters Marjorie, Janet and Ruth; a brother; and three grandsons.
Visitation will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at St. Mark's Church, followed by services at 6. Burial will be private.
