Greer, June 22 [1920] -- D M Caldwell, aged 40, died at Steedley's sanitarium on Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock afer a two months' illness during which time he underwent two serious operations. His wife and son, Hilliard Caldwell who was attending Harvard, when he received the news of his father's illness, were with him at the sanitarium.

Mr Caldwell was born in Heywood county, North Carolina, November 29, 1870. In 1896 he moved to Columbia where for 15 years he was engaged in business under the firm name of Young & Caldwell. He was a member of the First Baptist church, while a resident of Columbia, also a prominent Mason. In 1911 he became actively connected with the Shiver Springs company at Shelton, and during the years spent there he did much to promote the interests of the town and community. He relinquished his shares in the Shiver Springs company Feb 28, 1920 and had made preparations to engage in business in Nashville, Tennessee when he was taken sick while on a visit to his brother in law, John D Wood.

The family, accompanied by Mr and Mrs John D Shook of Spartanburg, left on Wednesday morning for Clyde, NC. The funeral was held at Clyde Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment was made in the family plot in the cemetery there.

Mr Caldwell had often visited in Greer. He has many friends here who know that his life was one of devotion to his church, his home, friends and business interests. His influence was always good and he will be missed. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the people of Greer and community.
