Robert Earl Smith

HOMER, LA - Funeral services will be held for Robert Earl Smith, 84, at the First Baptist Church in Homer on Friday, Sept. 16th at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. James Simeon and Rev. R.B. Moore, officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born June 23, 1927 in Homer, Louisiana to Willie Arthur Smith and Lura Nell Heard Smith. He entered into rest Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 at Homer Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. A carpenter for over 60 years, he was well known throughout Claiborne Parish for his hard work, kind words, and hands that created whatever job he was asked to do. He was a Veteran of the American Merchant Marine of the Coast Guard Division and a member of First Baptist Church. Not a man of many words, his kind, and sweet spirit will be missed.

His survivors include his wife of 64 years, Earline Callender Smith; daughter, Dianne Harmon and husband Eddie; son, Gary Earl Smith and wife Wanda; grandchildren, Ryan Harmon, Denys Ritzell and husband Jamey, April Richard and husband Bubba, David Smith and fiance' Angelia Blair, Thomas Smith and wife Brandi, and Ginger Baker and husband Chris. Eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred Mcham, Betty Garriga, and Patsy Winterrowed and husband Gene; two sister-n-laws, Betty Owen and husband Curtis and Artie Alford. Preceded in death by his parents; also two brothers, Albert Smith and Charles Ray Smith.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Ryan Harmon, David Smith, Thomas Smith, Jamey Ritzell, Chris Baker and great-grandson Zachary Ritzell. Honorary pallbearers will be Clyde Burns, Charles Sanford, Elmer Poss, Curtis Owen, Bart Wood, Chris McHam, Dr. D.K. Haynes, Dr. Mark Haynes, and Dr. Scott Haynes.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials are sent to First Baptist Church, Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Renovation Fund, Claiborne Academy Alline Smith Playground Equipment Fund or donor's choice. The family wishes to express many thanks for the love shown to them through phone calls, visits, cards, and many prayers. Also to the entire staff of Homer Memorial Hospital for all their tender care with special thanks to Mary Cochran, Sarah Haynes, Sudie Tucker and Helen and Clyde Burns.
