Obituary

Mrs. Margaret Barney, wife of George L. Barney, died at her home in Marshall on Monday morning, October 29.

Mrs. Barney had the misfortune, while visiting her sister [actually daughter Lillian] at Fulda about nine weeks ago, to fall, breaking one of her legs, and had only returned to her home about ten days ago. From the time of her accident she has been afflicted with heart trouble, and on Saturday night she passed into a deep slumber from which she never awakened.

Mrs. Barney was born in Logan county, Illinois, where she lived for many years, and where she was married to Mr. Barney before the war. Later they moved to Hughes county, Dakota and for two years previous to coming to Marshall lived at Pipestone. They have resided in Marshall just a year. Her husband and six children survive her. The children are Mrs. R. Thornson, Mrs. Stewart, of Fulda, Annie, Lizzie, Samuel and Clarence. Mrs. Canon [actually Martha Jane Kinnan], of Nebraska, and Mrs. Whitzell [Anna Whitesell], of Missouri, sisters of the deceased have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Barney recently, returning to their homes the day before Mrs. Barney's death. It was the first time the sisters had met in twenty years.

The funeral occurred Tuesday, short services being held at the house and at the Presbyterian church, the interment being in the Marshall cemetery. A large number of sympathetising friends being present.

-- The News Messenger, Marshall, Minnesota, Friday, Nov 2, 1894

--------------------------------------------

The death date on her stone reads Nov 1, 1895, which is obviously late by a year plus a couple days, based on her obituary. It was carved after the death of her husband George in 1906, by which time her children apparently had forgotten the exact date.
