William Swiggett Hinds was born at Seaford, Delaware and moved to Baltimore in 1844. He was employed in the merchant tailoring business at that time and in 1855 he went into the tailoring business for himself. He, along with his sons, became quite successful in the tailoring business and he retired in 1897.

WILLIAM S. HINDS
The funeral of Mr. William S. Hinds, who died on Tuesday, took place yesterday at 2 o'clock from the residence of Dr. James A. Zepp. West North avenue and Ninth street, where he had resided for several years. The funeral services were conducted by the Revs. Hugh Johnstou, W. M. Osbourn, E. L. Watson and D. A. Foard, of the Methodist Ep[iscopal Church, and the interment took place in Loudon Park. The pallbearers were Messrs. B. B. Porter, Dr. John F. Powell, Dr. W. S. Gibson, John O. Horsey, B. Frank Darby and Herman F. Lucke.
Mr. Hinds, who was born at Seaford, Del., July 22, 1820, came to Baltimore in 1844, and was employed by John M. Orem in the merchant tailoring business. In 1855 he embarked in the same line of business upon his own account, and continued actively engaged in it until 1807, when he retired, leaving one of his sons, Mr. Harry T. Hinds, to continue the business at S. West Fayette street, where he had been for 30 years.
Mr Hinds is survived by a widow, who was Miss Emily M Barrow, and nine children, who are Mrs. S. Frank Bennett, Mrs. James A. Zepp and Mrs. C Urban Smith, of Baltimore; Mrs. Harry E. White, of Brooklyn, N. Y.; Messrs. Edwin J. Hinds, Charles H. Hinds, Frank O. Hinds and Hary T. Hinds of Baltimore, and D. B. Hinds of Pittsburg. For many years Mr. Hinds was a member of Fayette Street Methodist Episcopal Church, but for the last few years he attended the First Methodist Episcopal Church.
