Joseph William Winter, age 91, of the Greenbriar Community in New Bern, died peacefully at home Wednesday, July 21, 2010.

Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marjorie (Brownley) Winter and by four children and three grandchildren: Linda A. Winter Blacksher (William G.) of Placida and Sarasota, FL; Ranell S. Winter of the home, and her two children, J. Springer Wahl and Catharine Haley Wahl, both of PA; W. Alan Winter of Atlantic Beach, FL, and his son, Joseph William Winter VI; and Sally E. Winter wife of Robert D. Beerman, of Lakeland, FL and Nantahala Shores, NC. Bill was predeceased by a daughter, Victoria Allyn Winter, his parents, Joseph William and Edna Haley Winter, and his two younger brothers David H. Winter and Richard L. Winter.

Bill was born October 25, 1918, in Montgomery County, PA, and raised in Delaware County, PA, both suburban Philadelphia communities. Following graduation from Haverford Township High School in 1936, he attended Drexel University and graduated from Charles Morris Price School of Advertising and Journalism, both in Philadelphia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served four years during World War II in the Coast Artillery and Field Artillery. He participated in the invasions and battles on Saipan, Leyte, and Okinawa as a Master Gunner and Battalion Sgt. Major.

After a career of 40 years in advertising and graphic arts, during which time the family lived in Chester County, PA, Bill and his wife retired to their summer home in Kent County, Maryland, on the Sassafras River. Bill had designed and built both the Pennsylvania and Maryland homes himself and was justly proud of those accomplishments. An avid sailor, Bill was a member and Officer of Kentmore Park Sailing Association and enjoyed small boat racing on the river; he was also a member of Georgetown Racing Fleet (Delaware) and participated in their races and cruises on the Chesapeake Bay. In 1990, when they moved to Oriental, NC, Bill and Marj sailed their Catalina 27 sailboat to its new berth at their dock on Smith Creek. He was a member of the Sailing Club of Oriental until 2004 when they moved to New Bern.

A memorial service for Bill will be held at a later time at the convenience of the family.
