Elsie Gay Haught Rowand, 95, a resident of Idamay since 1953, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday (Sept. 19, 2013) at the Pleasant Acres Christian Haven, where she had been a resident for the last seven years.
She was born Jan. 7, 1918, at Elk Fork, Tyler County, a daughter of the late Jasper Newton and Nora Alice Minor Haught.
Elsie was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and visiting with her children and grandchildren. Her favorite things were her church family and God, having been a longtime, faithful member of the Oakhurst Church of Christ.
She enjoyed studying the Bible, crossword puzzles, traveling and word searches. She was an aide at the Idamay Elementary School for many years and also the secretary/treasurer of the Idamay PTA.
As a child, she attended the Conaway one-room school where she went through the eighth grade. Forbidden to attend high school, she later earned her GED at age 42.
Survivors include her children, Mary Alice Hill, Cleveland, Ohio, Dorothy A. Brown, Fairmont, Archie Lee Rowand and wife Peggy Ann, Idamay, Ross Edward Rowand, Vinita, Okla., and Donna J. Blaney and husband Marvin, Fairmont; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six greatgreat- grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three step-greatgrandchildren; and one stepgreat- great-grandchild; one brother, Newton Haught, of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Pleasant Acres for their care and compassion during the years.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Archie Preston Rowand, who died April 13, 1981; two stepchildren, Sarah Shingleton and Helen Marie Hart; sisters, Gladys Sagner and Bernice White; and a daughterin- law, Loretta Rowand.
Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Oakhurst Church of Christ, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with Evangelist Randy Cook officiating. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Enterprise.
