Margaret S. Birch from Ocala, or Susie, as she was called by her many friends, passed away May 30th, 2013. She was born to Gordon and Mary Archer, in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 2, 1922. She went to school at the old St. Mary's High School. She grew up in the area of 26th and Summit, which is now I-35. She met Arthur L. (Pete) Birch, a soldier in the U.S. Army during a time when soldiers were invited into homes of local residents. They met in 1942 and were married in 1945. She worked for several years at Greyhound, as did her husband, then commonly referred to as "Shorty". They moved to Gladstone where she also worked at the Gladstone Post Office and helped to raise their three children, Linda, Mike, and Marty.

When her youngest started elementary school, she got a job working for Keller Food Company, a food wholesaler. She worked at Keller for 20 years, retiring in 1979. She and Pete had long ago purchased some land near the lake of the Ozarks where they spent nearly every weekend clearing land and building a place they could enjoy at retirement. They began to visit Florida in 1983 and would spend a month or two every year until 1993 when, having grown tired of the winters in Missouri, they moved to Ocala, Florida, full time where they enjoyed their retirement years in the tropical climate of Central Florida.

Susie was still active even in retirement. She volunteered for a local neighborhood watch program and won numerous awards for volunteering over 2,000 hours in a year. Beginning in 2003 she was volunteer for the Marion County Sheriff spending weekends with Pete driving in the county checking various schools and shopping areas for any activity that appeared to be out of the ordinary. They continued to drive every weekend for the next eight years.

She was a horse lover throughout her entire life, having owned several of the large animals, and she loved to ride and care for them.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Arthur (Pete) Birch, their daughter Linda (Gerry) Waybright, of Ocala, Florida, Michael (Sharon) Birch, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and Martin (Candy) Birch, of Olathe, Kansas, grandchildren, Jeremy, Lindsay, and Trevor, and great-grandchildren, Amber, Colin, Caleb, Cameron, and Jackson.
