According to the Shelby County Register, William was the son of William Everett Dismuke, Sr., and Ruth Whitmire. At the time of his death, he and wife Mary Agnes resided at 2640 Kenner.

On the afternoon of Monday, May 15, 1961, William was fatally shot by Joe Rose, a fellow employee at the offices of Arkansas Best Freight Company on South Parkway, where William worked as a sales manager. The shooting occurred following a year of tension between the two men, which ended in violence when Rose mistakenly believed he had been framed in an illicit love affair with another woman by William Dismuke.
