DARRELL CANTRELL
1935 - 2013

Darrell Cantrell, 78, departed this earth on June 1, 2013, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, surrounded by his loving family.

Darrell was a 23 year veteran of the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of Sergeant Major prior to his retirement. During his military service, he served two tours of duty in Europe, one tour in Korea and one tour in Vietnam. Darrell was also a diligent worker and a retiree of the U.S. Postal Service where he served as a letter carrier in the city of Ashland. Darrell was a 1953 graduate of Ashland High School and furthered his education by obtaining a degree in Business Management from Ashland Community College, he was also a Kentucky colonel, a loyal 42nd Degree Mason and a loyal Shriner.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Ray and Myrtle Lou Hamilton Cantrell, an older brother, Don (Margaret) Cantrell; and a sister, Marie (Tom) Cantrell Vance Leake.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Ann Seagraves Cantrell, sister, Helen (Charles) Cantrell Hunt Edmonds, two brothers, Tom (June) Cantrell, and Joe (Sharon) Cantrell, all of Ashland, three sons, Darrell Anthony (Sue) Cantrell of Florida, Michael David D. (Rose) Cantrell of Greenup and John Edward (Kathy) Cantrell of New York, seven grandchildren, Gina Anderson, George A. Cantrell, Jesse W. Cantrell, Travis Cantrell, Maryn Cantrell, Saoirse Cantrell and Shelia Gorman, five great-grandchildren, Gavin Anderson, Dylan Anderson, Logan Cantrell and Jacob and Trevor Gorman. Darrell will certainly be missed by his extended family and by his numerous friends.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland, with Pastor James Stamper officiating. Burial will follow in Kentucky Veteran Cemetery North East, with military rites by Ceredo-Kenova American Legion Post 93.
