Author. A Harvard graduate, he served in Africa and Italy during World War II, working in military intelligence and as a translator. His first book “The Gallery” (1947) is a semi-autobiographical fictionalized account of his experiences in Italy and was well received by critics and the public. His subsequent efforts were not as successful; however, he has enjoyed something of a revival in recent years. Officially, he died of a cerebral hemorrhage but there is some evidence that his untimely death was alcohol related. Originally interred where he died in Italy, his body was later exhumed by his family and reburied in his home state of Massachusetts.
