William served as a corporal with the 4th Delaware Infantry, Company G during the Civil War.

He was a 19-year-old farmer when he enlisted at Leipsic on Aug. 21, 1862 with Capt. McClary.

He had two fingers on his right hand amputated. Middle finger of left hand was wounded by buckshot June 19, 1864. He was mustered out June 10, 1865.
