Lyle K. of Ulysses, PA

Lyle K. "Wild Child" Sherwood, age 43, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, while racing at the Woodhull Raceway. Born July 24, 1961 in Wellsville, NY, he was the son of Harold L. and Shirley Hancock Sherwood. On December 18, 1982 in Ulysses, he married the former Abby Palmatier, who survives. He was a partner in Sherwood Enterprises in Ulysses. He raced 358 modified at Woodhull Raceway and other area tracks for 12 years. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Amanda Sherwood of Ulysses; four brothers, Harold "Walt" Sherwood, Jr. of Yorks Corners, NY, Kevin (Trudy) Sherwood, Robert (Vicki) Sherwood, and Carroll Sherwood, all of Ulysses; a sister, Darcy Lea (Ben) Emmick of Galeton, PA; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

The Twin Tiers of New York and Pennsylvania along with the entire racing community are saddened by the death of Lyle Sherwood. Sherwood, was a regular at the famed Woodhull Raceway through his entire driving career and it was at that same venue which he met his untimely death. On a lap 23 restart of the scheduled 25 lap 358 Modified feature Sherwood, who was running sixth at the time and charging to the front did not come up to full speed at the drop of the green. His car then suddenly veered hard left into the infield area where it began to accelerate at an alarming rate of speed. After crashing through billboards and nearly missing several individuals, a push truck and the Woodhull track ambulance, the out of control machine then crossed the back straight barely missing oncoming traffic. Sherwood’s car then flew off the race track and headed towards the open fields and swamp area at the rear of the facility. Several seconds later the machine came to rest nearly a quarter of a mile away from the race track near the woods making it difficult for rescue workers to find their way to the disabled car. Once on the scene the Woodhull Volunteer Ambulance rescue workers immediately began CPR on the lifeless Sherwood. With the use of 4 wheel ATV machines, Sherwood was quickly brought back to the awaiting ambulance where he was rushed to a local hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival. However it is speculated that Sherwood did succumb to a massive heart attack. With the loss of Lyle Sherwood, racing may never be the same again in the upstate New York racing community as the popular speedster was a one of a kind, stand on the gas, go for broke, ride the cushion type of a competitor. His energy, personality, charisma and appeal with the fans and other drivers is unparallel and his presence will be sorely missed.

God speed Lyle, we are all going to miss you.
