He was a seal "fisherman" and spent months at a time out at sea. He married Lucinda Mitchell on 18 Dec 1879, and the couple started a family in Mud Cove, Newfoundland. Lucinda died in 1889 after giving birth to five children: Jane, Emily, Elizabeth, Reuben and John.
When his daughter, Elizabeth, moved west with her husband and family, John went too, and lived with them the rest of his life. His granddaughter, Lucy, remembered him as a slightly built man who was nevertheless very strong. He provided the family with firewood, cutting trees down with an axe and dragging them home. He was also gentle, and watched over his young grandchildren like a mother hen; the kids all called him Nana.
He and his youngest grandchild, Johnny, were inseparable pals, often walking out hand-in-hand to pick wildflowers for the table or kindling for the fire. Before he died in 1927, he told his daughter to "look after Johnny," which is striking given that young Johnny drowned only a little over a year later.
