Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight in Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Brawley for Leo Axler, 85, of Brawley, who died Thursday in his home.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley with the Rev. Richard Moore of First Southern Baptist Church of Holtville officiating.
Mr. Axler was born Aug. 7, 1916, in Eldora, Iowa. He moved to the Imperial Valley with his family in 1921. He was the oldest of five children.
He attended schools in rural Holtville until the eighth grade, when he started working full-time for the family farm.
He married Julie Jessie Nelson in 1940.
Mr. Axler worked for Victor Chalupnik, sewing grain sacks, and in 1943 he drove a tractor for John Suchey.
For the next 45 years he worked for J. Emmanuelli & Sons until his retirement in 1990. He continued to farm his own acreage after his retirement.
Mr. Axler was preceded in death by his wife, Julie Axler, in 1979; son, Dale Axler, in 2001, and a brother, Fred Axler, in 1995.
He is survived by his daughter, Leona Barber of Brawley; daughters and sons-in-law, Ginger and Ken Swaim and Judy and Toby Johnson, all of Brawley; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stanley and Gladys Axler of Sanger, and Marvon and Norma Axler of Golden, Okla.; sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Sam Stacey of Reserve, N.M.; grandchildren, Terri Lockwood of Apple Valley, Jim Love of North Las Vegas, Diana Marshall of Hampton, Va., Kevin Swaim of Brawley, Michelle Carter of Frisco, Texas, and Julie and Jason Johnson of Brawley; and 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
