MURIEL K. AMALU, CAMPBELL ESTATE HEIRESS, IS DEAD
One of the principal heirs of Hawaii's multi-million Campbell estate died Monday afternoon [19 March 1951].

She was Mrs. Muriel K. Amalu, the former Ethel Muriel Campbell. Mrs. Amalu died at 3:45 p.m. at the upper Manoa home at 3688 Waaloa Rd. after a lingering illness.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Williams mortuary, a family spokesman announced.

Mrs. Amalu, long prominent in civic and social affairs, was the third daughter of James Campbell, one of Hawaii's leading financiers during the monarchy, and Abigail Kuaihelani Maipinepine Campbell.

HAD THREE SISTERS
Her sisters include Mrs. Francis Wrigley of Lancaster, Calif. (Mary Beatrice), Mrs. Alice Kamokila Campbell of Honolulu, and the late Abigail, the Princess David Kawananakoa.

Born in London, Mrs. Amalu was educated in Catholic schools in California.

Her first marriage was to Robert Witt Shingle on February 18, 1909. Mr. Shingle was a prominent businessman and at one time was president of the territorial senate. He came from Wyoming and for years directed the Henry Waterhouse Trust Co.

A gracious, charming hostess, she took time from homemaking and motherhood to take part in civic affairs. Prominent in politics, she was Republican national committeewoman for Hawaii in 1938.

HAD EIGHT CHILDREN
She and Mr. Shingle had eight children. One son, Robert W. Shingle Jr., was killed in an automobile accident in 1930. The Shingles gave Shingle Memorial hospital to Hoolehua, Molokai in his honor.

The surviving children are Mrs. Albert H. Wilcox and Mrs. Thomas D. King, both of Kauai, Mrs. Ross Sutherland, Fred Campbell Shingle, Walter Seymour Shingle, Gilmer Kurtz Shingle and James Campbell Shingle, all of Oahu. Nine grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Shingle died in October, 1935, after a lingering illness.

In January 1937, Mrs. Shingle was married to Charles K. Amalu, musician and businessman, who also survives her. (SOURCE: Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Tuesday, 20 March 1951)
