Funeral services for Jake Beach, 79, of Slayton were held Tuesday morning at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. William Gorman sang the requiem high Mass. 10-27-1950
Jerome DeHatre came from Quebec, Canada hidden in a box car. He worked around Murray County and was joined by his brother Alfred. He was having difficulty with people spelling his name so one day he and his son Ernest went and had the family names changed to Beach, so he became popularly known as "Jake Beach".
He bought the farm now owned by Ray Priebe and was married in 1901 to Nelda (Deneault) Morin, the daughter of John and Ozelda Morin who had come from Canada, is a Kankakee, Illinois resident.
They had nine children; Ernest Beach, married to Lena Schreier, who was killed in an airplane accident in 1956; Rosella, (Mrs. Joseph Schreier), Ozelda, (Mrs. Ted Ruppert), Alice (Mrs. Peter Schreier) was shot by her son-in-law, Everett Gillis, outside St. Ann's Catholic Church, Verne Beach who married Emma Oldwurtel, Loretta (Mrs. Alvin Swenhaugen), Clifford Beach who was married to Elizabeth Ruppert and later to Bertha Prahm, Pricilla (Mrs. Walter Deslauries), Evelyn married Nels Forsberg who was killed in Armistice Day Blizzard and later became Mrs. Clifford Pommier and now lives at Buffalo, MN.
